CVS Volunteer Process
Information Kit
CVS volunteers have:
- A personal interview with their area coordinator.
- A National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) & if applicable sign a Statutory Declaration stating that they have never been convicted of an offence, if a person has been a citizen or a permanent resident of a country other than Australia, since turning the age of sixteen.
- Two referee checks.
The Match
- The Aged Care Home generally refers residents who have agreed they would like a visitor from the Community Visitors Scheme.
- The Coordinator of the Scheme will then carefully match the resident and the volunteer, on a one-to-one basis, taking into account such factors as interests, background and culture.
- The volunteer will receive a written profile on the allocated resident.
- A meeting will be arranged with the appropriate staff of the Aged Care Home, volunteer and CVS coordinator.
- At this meeting, the volunteer will be given an orientation to Aged Care Home, as well as meeting the key contact staff of the home (usually the Lifestyle Coordinator, Activities Coordinator or Divisional therapist).
- Memorandum of understanding will be signed by volunteer.
- Introduced to allocated resident - a Friendship begins.
There are many ways of getting to know someone and becoming a special friend:
- Share stories about each others lives
- Have a cup of tea together
- Read a story or the newspaper together
- Share a hobby, interest or activity
- Listen to music together
- Sit quietly and hold hands
- Take a walk together
- Talk and listen to each other
